How to Choose the Right Strap for You

With the material basics covered, here's how to narrow down the right strap for your playing style:

Width. Around 2" is the standard width for most guitar straps, and it works well for a wide range of guitars and playing styles. Wider straps (2.5"–3") distribute weight more evenly across your shoulder, which matters most if you're playing a heavier guitar or standing for long sets. Narrower straps (under 2") tend to look sleeker, but often come with a shoulder pad or tapered design to help offset the extra pressure on your shoulder from the reduced surface area.

Length & Adjustability. Look for a strap with a long adjustment range, especially if more than one person might use it, or if you switch between sitting and standing while playing. A wide adjustable range also means the strap will still fit right if you switch guitars later.

Leather vs. Woven vs. Seatbelt-Style.

• Full leather straps offer the most durability and mold to your shoulder over time. A great pick if you want something that improves with age and don't mind a short break-in period. Leather is also a byproduct of the meat and dairy industry, with most hides otherwise headed for landfill, so a full-grain leather strap is a genuine form of upcycling, not the reason animals are raised.
• Woven/jacquard straps bring the most personality of the bunch, especially if you're after a vintage-inspired look. The style traces back to the "hootenanny" straps of the 1960s and '70s, worn by artists like Jimi Hendrix and Bob Dylan, and modern versions still come with leather reinforced ends for security where it matters most, so you get the character without sacrificing durability.
• Seatbelt-style straps (nylon webbing) are built for comfort and durability on long gigs, with a slightly more casual, roadie-tested feel.

Match it to how you play. Gigging musicians moving a lot on stage may want a wider, more secure strap with reinforced ends. Studio players or those sitting most of the session might prioritize comfort and adjustability over width. If you play multiple guitars, consider having more than one strap so each is dialed in for that specific instrument's weight and balance.

A note on "vegan leather." If you're comparing materials, it's worth knowing that most faux or "vegan" leather is PVC or polyurethane plastic. It doesn't biodegrade, and it tends to crack and peel well before real leather shows its age.
