How to Choose the Right Strap for Your Instrument
Share
When it comes to playing a musical instrument, the strap you choose is more than just a way to hold your guitar in place. It is an essential part of your comfort, your posture, and your identity as a player. The right strap can improve your playing experience and make a bold statement that reflects your personality. With so many options available, here is everything you need to know to make the right choice.

🎯 1. Understand Your Instrument
Different instruments require different types of straps based on their size, weight, and playing posture.
Electric and Acoustic Guitars: These instruments are generally light, so most straps will work well. As a general rule, look for a strap that is at least 2" wide for comfort and support, especially if it does not have a shoulder pad. For long performances or practice sessions, a padded or wider strap helps reduce fatigue by distributing weight more evenly. That said, thin straps with a shoulder pad are also an excellent option. The classic saddle-style strap, which was incredibly popular in the 1950s, is a perfect example of how a narrower strap with a well-designed shoulder pad can deliver outstanding comfort without sacrificing style. There are also exceptions at the other end of the spectrum. Slash famously plays with a 3/4" strap and no shoulder pad at all. All our straps are designed to fit both electric and acoustic guitars, so whatever your preference, we have an option to suit your style.
Bass Guitars: Bass guitars are heavier, so thicker and more substantial straps are recommended. Straps in the 2.5" or wider range offer excellent comfort, but a well-made 2" strap can work just as well, as many iconic bass players from the 1960s and 1970s preferred. A 2" strap delivers that classic, timeless feel with the right balance of support and vintage style.
Other Instruments (Mandolin, Ukulele, Banjo, etc.): Lighter instruments need thinner, more adjustable straps that are not bulky. Our 1950 Straps at 1" width with a removable shoulder pad offer a customizable fit, letting you add padding for extra comfort or remove it for a lighter feel. We also have ukulele-specific straps designed to suit the instrument's size and weight perfectly.
For instruments without strap pins, straps can easily be adapted. Carabiners can be attached to most straps to accommodate banjos and similar instruments. For mandolins and acoustic instruments with only one strap pin, headstock ties or laces can be used to secure the other end of the strap, giving you a comfortable and secure setup without any modifications to your instrument.
🎯 2. Consider Strap Material and Durability
The material of your strap plays a huge role in both comfort and longevity. Here is a breakdown of the most common options.
Leather Straps: Leather is one of the most popular materials for guitar and bass straps due to its durability, classic look, and comfort. Over time, leather softens and molds to your body, offering increased comfort with every use. It is sturdy, long-lasting, and ages beautifully. We carry a wide selection of leather straps to fit every style and budget, from distressed straps with a suede backing to stiff English bridle leather for the closest replicas of vintage designs.
Handwoven Organic Cotton Straps: Crafted from 100% organic cotton, our handwoven straps offer a unique, artisanal touch. The tight weaving process makes them incredibly strong and resistant to stretching, while the natural fibers are soft, breathable, and comfortable for extended use.
Nylon Dupont 6/6 Straps: Made from super-soft, high-strength webbing, our seatbelt-style straps offer a unique blend of comfort and durability. Softer than polyester or polypropylene, they feel smooth against your skin, are breathable and moisture-wicking, and slide easily around the neck. Unlike the market standard which typically uses lower-quality polypropylene, our high-strength Nylon Dupont 6/6 webbing is far superior in both feel and performance.
Polypropylene Straps: Polypropylene makes up around 97% of straps available on the market. While affordable, it is stiffer and less comfortable than other materials, often feeling rough or abrasive against the skin. It is a cost-effective option but not one we choose to use at HipStrap.
Neoprene Straps: Neoprene excels in comfort and function. Known for its excellent cushioning properties, it is an ideal choice for reducing shoulder fatigue, especially when playing heavier instruments like bass guitars. They may not be the most fashionable option, but they deliver excellent support and weight distribution for long sessions.
Faux Leather / Vegan Leather: Typically made from petroleum-based materials like PU or PVC, faux leather may seem like a sustainable choice but the reality is quite different. It is not biodegradable, it cracks and peels over time, and its durability is far inferior to real leather. Many brands use greenwashing tactics to market these materials as eco-friendly despite their plastic origins. This is one of the main reasons we do not offer faux leather straps. 🎯 3. Adjustability and Fit
A strap that does not fit properly can lead to discomfort and poor posture, which can negatively impact your performance.
Adjustable Length: Every player has their own preferred strap length and comfort is key. Whether you prefer the short strap style of The Beatles or the longer length favored by Johnny Ramone, there is no right or wrong. It is all about what feels best for you.
When it comes to adjustment systems, there are some important differences worth knowing. Straps with a Tri Glide buckle allow you to set the length anywhere along the full range of the strap, typically between 31" and 59", giving you complete freedom to find your exact position. Leather straps with traditional buckles or a leather tongue adjustment system, on the other hand, typically offer a limited number of fixed length positions determined by the holes or slots in the leather. The trade-off is that once you set a leather strap to your preferred length, it tends to stay there permanently, which many players appreciate for its consistency and reliability. Both systems have their advantages and the best choice comes down to your personal preference.
At HipStrap, we use only high-quality metal buckles and Tri Glide buckles on all straps that do not feature a self-adjusting leather tongue mechanism, ensuring durability and secure adjustments every time.
Strap Width: Wider straps provide more surface area and distribute the weight of the instrument more evenly across your shoulder, which is particularly important for heavier instruments. Our thinner straps are designed with a built-in shoulder pad inspired by the first modern guitar straps of the 1950s, with some models featuring high-density padding that maintains its shape over time. The shoulder pad is easily removable, giving you the option to use it or go without depending on your preference.
Strap Locks: Strap locks are an essential accessory for any serious player. Over the years we have seen many musicians at trade shows and events with severely stretched strap ends from other brands, their guitar hanging on by a thread and disaster just one strum away. Strap locks offer an easy and affordable solution, and if you love your strap, they are absolutely worth it. The important thing to keep in mind is that once a flimsy leather end from a low-quality strap starts stretching, it can break at any moment. At HipStrap, we use leather that does not stretch like that. In all our years making straps, we have not had a single return due to a leather quality issue.
The market offers metal, rubber, and leather strap lock options. Metal strap locks provide robust security but often require modifications to your instrument. Our rubber strap locks offer flexibility, durability, and superior performance with no modifications needed. Since we started making them, not a single one has broken, dried out, or stretched. They are also perfect for vintage straps that have stretched over time, allowing you to continue using them securely without any worry.
🎯 4. Padding for Extra Comfort
If you plan to play for long periods or carry a heavier instrument, padding can make a significant difference.
Padded Straps: Padded straps are designed to cushion the weight of the instrument, providing a more comfortable playing experience. Padded leather straps combine both style and comfort, while padded nylon or neoprene options are lightweight and practical.
Padding Quality: Most companies that offer padded straps use lightweight foam that compresses over time and loses its cushioning ability. Our padded straps feature high-density padding specifically designed to resist compression and maintain consistent comfort and support, even during long practice sessions or performances. Our The 1950 Strap is a great example of this, featuring a precisely engineered high-density shoulder pad structure that maintains its shape and cushioning over time, no matter how many hours you put in.
🎯 5. Style and Aesthetics
Your strap is not just a functional accessory. It is an opportunity to express your personal style and identity as a musician.
Classic Leather Looks: If you prefer a timeless aesthetic, leather straps in black, brown, or tan are always a strong choice. These are particularly popular for acoustic guitars and classic rock players.
Minimal and Clean: For players who prefer a sleek, understated look, our minimal seatbelt-style straps are handmade with the finest materials in classic colors. No patterns, no fuss. Just a beautifully made strap that lets your playing do the talking. Perfect for players who want premium quality with a clean, modern aesthetic.
Bold and Colorful Designs: For players who want to stand out, our Original Jacquard and Classic Jacquard collections feature bold patterns and vibrant colors inspired by the iconic hootenanny straps of the 1960s and 1970s worn by legends like Jimi Hendrix, Bob Dylan, and George Harrison.
Handwoven and One-of-a-Kind: For something truly unique, our Handwoven Collection offers straps crafted by hand, one at a time, each a completely unique piece.
🎯 6. Price, Quality, and Who You Are Buying From
While you do not need to spend a fortune on a strap, investing in quality is always worth it in the long run. But price alone does not tell the whole story.
Budget Options: If you are just starting out or need a lightweight solution, there are affordable nylon and woven straps that will meet your basic needs without compromising on comfort.
Mid-Range Straps: Leather and padded nylon straps offer a great balance of comfort, durability, and style. They are ideal for intermediate players who want something that will last.
Premium Straps: Full-grain leather straps or straps with high-density padding offer maximum comfort and durability for professional musicians or those with heavier instruments. At HipStrap, all our straps are backed by our Limited Lifetime Guarantee, so whatever your budget, you can buy with complete confidence.
Know Who You Are Buying From: Over the years at trade shows and events, we have had many conversations with musicians who paid a premium price for a strap from another brand, only to receive something of lower quality, wait months for delivery, or in some cases never receive their order at all, with the company going silent after taking payment. Premium pricing does not always mean premium quality or service. At HipStrap, we are a real company with real people behind every order. If something goes wrong with your delivery, even something completely outside of our control like a lost package, we will ship a replacement right away. No questions asked. That is what standing behind your product actually means.
